There’s no better vehicle to take off-roading than a Jeep, and to keep your Jeep a joy to drive, on the road and off it, head to your dealership for some Jeep off-road maintenance.
Keep the Suspension Lubricated
Jeep vehicles come with very powerful suspensions. These suspensions are what protect the entirety of the vehicle and are absolutely essential if you want to have a stable and safe experience. Get in the habit of inspecting the suspension on a regular basis and make sure the joints, rods, and bushings all have the lubrication they need to move smoothly over rough terrain. If you’re not sure how to do this, be sure to ask your dealer to take care of it regularly.
You’re Only as Good as Your Tires
Taking your Jeep off road puts the tires under greater pressure and also makes it much more likely they’ll become misaligned. Misalignment means more pressure is being placed on certain tires and certain parts of the tires than others. Have your dealership rotate your tires a couple times a year and make sure to have an alignment done 3 to 4 times a year if you’re regularly going off-road. Before you head out for an adventure, always make sure the tires are inflated to exactly the right psi.
Change the Oil More Often
When you go off road regularly, you put a lot of extra dust through the engine. While most people will only need to change their oil once to twice a year, you may have to do it two or three times a year, or even four, depending on how much you go off-road. Check your oil regularly, and if it’s looking thick and full of grit, get an oil change.
Never Neglect the Brakes
Your brakes are more important than ever when you’re in an off-road situation. They may also be enduring a lot more wear and tear than they would if you only drove on the road, so be sure to get inspections at the intervals recommended in your owner’s manual and talk to your dealership about whether you might need inspections more often. You also want to be proactive in responding to any noises or odd sensations from the brakes, like squealing, pulling, vibrating, or a mushy pedal.
Keep the Cooling System In Shape
The cooling system is very important at all times, but especially when you’re going off-road and potentially subjecting your engine to harsher environments. You want to be very sure that your engine can cool down exactly as it needs to. Have the coolant flushed every two years or so, and have your dealership examine your cooling system carefully at least once a year to make sure.
